What is the Center for Credit and Consumer Research?

The Center for Credit and Consumer Research is an applied research and outreach unit of the Sam and Irene Black School of Business at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. The Center is an outreach-based organization; teaching students throughout Erie County middle schools and high schools about financial literacy and credit issues. Since the Center is a non-profit organization, all education, outreach, and assistance is provided completely free of charge.

Why was the Center created?

In 2004, the Center was created to develop ways to educate individuals on prudent money management, financial literacy, and credit issues. The Center’s goal remains to provide free educational outreach programs to help people of all ages (although we usually work with students) learn about credit and financial literacy issues. .

What are the Center’s financial literacy outreach programs?

Since its inception, the CCCR has developed three interactive learning formats to stimulate individuals’ interest in money management. The programs include:

    • 1.Driver’s Training for the Credit Card Highway
Driver’s Training for the Credit Card Highway is a workshop designed for teen audiences and adults. It consists of a PowerPoint presentation focusing on credit card use and debt prevention. The instructor is given a PowerPoint presentation that is fully prepared, with completed slides and teacher notes for each slide. Participants receive a “Driver’s Manual” with incomplete slides that they fill in during the presentation. This booklet can be kept as a resource of important credit information after the presentation is over.
  • 2. S 3 Live Game Show
The “Save, Spend, Succeed” (S 3) Live Game Show is an interactive, family-feud style financial literacy game show which teaches participants the information and skills necessary for smart money management and career choices. We offer game shows for middle school, high school, and college students.
  • 3. S 3 Online Game
The S3 Online Game was created to give participants convenient, online access to our game show. The game is designed for all ages, and allows players to test their knowledge of financial literacy topics based on their level of learning. This exciting “game show” format can be played individually or in a group setting.

Who benefits from the Center’s outreach initiatives?

Everyone! Whether young or old, everyone has questions about credit and financial literacy. The Center’s outreach programs are geared towards anyone of middle school age or older, and offer factual, practical advice to help you improve your financial future.

What does the Center hope to accomplish?

The Center hopes to impact the lives of youth through adults in the tri-county area and beyond. Financial education can help people achieve greater self-sufficiency, enhanced retirement security, and an improved quality of life.
